PORT - the Privacy Officers' Round Table

Welcome to the web-page of the Privacy Officers' Round Table, or PORT for short!

PORT was established in 2005, as an initiative suggested by the Privacy Commissioner.  PORT is a voluntary, self-managing goup of Privacy Officers (or personnel working in that field) employed by both public and private sector organisations.  PORT's purposes are to provide members with an opportunity to network and informally discuss issues or trends in the privacy and information management areas - encompassing aspects of all relevant legislation (eg. the Privacy Act, Health Information Privacy Code, and Official Information Act).

The current membership includes people in:

  • Central Government agencies
  • Local Government agencies
  • Banking & financial sector
  • Communications sector
  • Energy sector
  • Health sector
  • Non-profit organisations

PORT members are based all over New Zealand but meetings have been held in Wellington, to date.  We usually meet in the Wellington City Council's committee rooms, four times a year.  We do recognise there are many individuals employed in this field outside Wellington, and as a result are currently investigating technological opportunities for distance members to link into the quarterly meetings.
 
The meetings generally include guest presentations, as well as discussions about recent Human Rights Review Tribunal decisions.  Members share their experiences with issues that are under consideration by their organisation (while ensuring that no personal details are disclosed!), as well as discussions about the various privacy policies and approaches that their individual organisations are employing.  Following each meeting, the coordinating member circulates an e-mail summary of the meeting's discussions to all those on the distribution list together with copies of any PowerPoint presentations or hand-outs.

Members coordinate the programme for each meeting . However,  if there is a topic or a speaker which you believe the group would be interested in, please provide this information to one of the people specified above.
