Does international or overseas information show on a New Zealand credit report?

The New Zealand Privacy Act does not prohibit the collection of credit information from credit reporters overseas (provided that it complies with the rules of the Credit Reporting Privacy Code). Credit reporters must collect credit information directly from the individual concerned unless the individual authorises the collection from another source such as an overseas credit reporter, or the information is publicly available. Credit reporters are also allowed to collect credit default information including from a debt collector.

The privacy laws of other countries can also be a limitation. For example, such cross-border information sharing is prohibited by the Australian Privacy Act 1988.

If you would like to check what credit information has been collected about you, including any overseas credit information, you can make an access request to the credit reporter under information privacy principle 6. Access to this information is free and you can do this using our AboutMe tool.
