The Privacy Act applies to home rental businesses like Airbnbs, baches, and cribs. Like all businesses, people who are renting out accomodation can only collect personal information that is necessary for a purpose connected with their function or activity. They need to then keep the information secure, and get rid of it securely when it’s no longer needed.
For example, collecting contact details for house or room bookings would be okay. Sharing those contact details with a friend so they could market their Airbnb to your previous customers would not.
If you’re recording in your Airbnb, bach, or crib, then you need to tell guests that. Clear signage should let them know what areas are being recorded and why. You also need to say whether you’re recording video, or sound, or both.
We recommend limiting the amount of personal information you collect. For example, security camera systems should not record audio if images tell the story.
Recordings should be securely disposed of once they are no longer needed.
